One of the technologies we use to accomplish skin rejuvenation is microneedling. It helps your skin naturally repair damage, including older damage. Issues such as acne scarring, fine lines, and texture can all be addressed by microneedling. At Rinnova Skin & Body, we use SkinPen II as our microneedling device.
What is Microneedling?
The SkinPen II is a pen-sized device with several exceptionally small needles in its tip, hence the term “microneedling”. The SkinPen II will make a series of microscopic incisions in the skin, which are inconspicuous and not painful. Microneedling uses your body’s natural healing to rejuvenate the skin. Each tiny incision will stimulate your body to increase collagen production in the area. In the effort to repair the incisions, your skin will incidentally heal common damage from scars and wrinkle causing damage.
Microneedling benefits include:
- Improve fine lines and wrinkles
- Increase collagen production
- Decrease acne scars
- Firm and smooth skin texture
- Soften stretch marks
- Reduce pore size
Many Boulder-area patients prefer microneedling because it is a simple, minimally invasive procedure that requires almost no recovery time. The procedure itself is quick, painless, and safe.
What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)?
At Rinnova Skin & Body, we offer an enhanced microneedling treatment using your body’s own plasma to stimulate growth factors and increase the healing process. A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient into a tube and placed in a centrifuge to spin down the cells and obtain the highly concentrated Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP penetrates the skin through the microchannels created by the SkinPen. The results are an even greater improvement in fine lines and acne scars. Since the patient’s own blood is used for the procedure, this virtually eliminates side effects. The PRP also speeds up the healing process to provide less downtime. PRP can be used in conjunction with microneedling, Halo, CO2, or virtually any laser resurfacing procedure.
What to Expect
At a consultation, an aesthetician will discuss your specific goals and treatment options to achieve them. Microneedling can be a part of a treatment plan, with some patients even incorporating it into a monthly regimen. During the treatment, we will take a picture of the area to help track progress of your treatment. Then the aesthetician will apply a topical numbing cream to the area for 30 to 60 minutes. She then passes the pen over the area, allowing the needles to make their tiny incisions. Since the area is numb, the sensation is very similar to brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush. Minimal downtime includes mild redness for one to three days and you may experience some minor peeling, similar to a light sunburn. Be sure to avoid excessive time in the sun or exfoliation over the next week. Other than that, there is no real downtime.
