All About Sunscreen
With summer coming up right around the corner, now is a good time to refresh our knowledge on the importance of sunscreen! Sunscreen is a vital part of daily skincare and should be worn every single day– yes, including those gloomy winter days! Living in Boulder, we experience almost 300 sunny days a year and can be at risk for more skin damage due to our high elevation.

Sun Damage & SPF
Sun rays can affect you through windows, on cloudy days, and even from the reflection on a lake, beach, or snow. That is why it’s recommended to wear sunscreen even if you don’t think you’ll be exposed to the sun.

The sun emits two harmful UV rays which are called UVA and UVB. Both of these UV rays are what can cause skin damage and the main reason to use sunscreen. It’s also good to use sunscreen that is broad-spectrum, which means it will protect your skin from both.
• UVA is known as the wrinkle rays which cause pigmentation and deep lines in your skin.
• UVB are the rays that cause sunburn and redness.
• Radiation from the sun is a known carcinogen and can cause skin cancer.

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measurement of protection against the sun. It is recommended to choose a high SPF, between 30-50 because it blocks 97-98% of the sun’s harmful rays.

Physical VS Hybrid Sunscreen
Sunscreen comes as either a full physical form or a hybrid. Physical sunscreen, also known as mineral sunscreens, mainly contains zinc oxide and/or titanium oxide, which reflect UV rays away from the skin. They are broad-spectrum and are great for sensitive skin. Hybrid sunscreens add extra chemicals, such as octinoxate, which are used to help absorb UV rays and blend into the skin. Both types are great options and it’s completely up to you and your skin needs to decide which type you prefer.

Our Sunscreens
Here at Rinnova Skin & Body, we carry a variety of sunscreens by brands such as ISDIN, Revision, and Elta MD. Come on to Rinnova to discuss what skin concerns you have, and we can match you with a great sunscreen to fit your needs!

EltaMD is a sunscreen line that is recommended by dermatologists and uses zinc oxide as its main ingredient. All their sunscreens are broad-spectrum. They carry sunscreens for dry, acne-prone, and active skin types. Some of their sunscreens come with a tint, which can blend into the skin and avoid the white overlay that can occur with some zinc sunscreens.

ISDIN offers three physical sunscreens, eryfotona actinica (tinted), eryfotona ageless (non-tinted), and a mineral brush sunscreen. All options are SPF 50 and contain zinc oxide; the eryfotona line has vitamin E and DNA repair technology that fights existing sun damage.

Revision has the Intellishade line which is a 5 in 1 tinted moisturizer that has an SPF of 45. Intellishade acts as an anti-aging moisturizer that can help improve the look of fine lines, and redness and is broad-spectrum so it will protect against both UVB and UVA. This line comes in original, matte, and TruPhysical to meet a variety of skincare needs.

We have samples of almost all of our sunscreens so feel free to stop in and see what works best for you!
