How Long Will My Sclerotherapy Results Last?

Few conditions that are typically benign can impact your appearance quite like varicose veins. The twisted, gnarled, and dark vein tissue can look angry and painful, even when you have few other symptoms.
Fortunately, sclerotherapy is one treatment that eliminates the problem at the source. At Rinnova Skin & Body, we always have your best self in mind with our medical aesthetic services, so we’re proud to offer our patients sclerotherapy for varicose veins.
Let’s take a closer look at sclerotherapy and how it works to remove your unsightly varicose vein issues.
Venous insufficiency
Varicose veins start when tiny valves inside your veins begin to leak. That compromises their role of keeping blood flowing in one direction, toward the heart.
Valve failure permits blood to pool, usually in your legs. This pooling places pressure on vein walls, stretching them and causing further valve failure. When the superficial veins near the skin become swollen, the characteristic appearance of varicose veins becomes obvious.
It’s a condition also called venous insufficiency. Your body accounts for reductions in blood supply and revascularizes these areas to remove dependence on the compromised veins.
Because of this new vein growth, the varicose veins become redundant and can be removed without negatively affecting cell health.
How sclerotherapy works
At one time, surgical removal of varicose veins was a common treatment, where the veins themselves were cut and removed through incisions in your legs. Sclerotherapy represents a nonsurgical way of accomplishing the same thing.
During your sclerotherapy session, Dr. Becker will inject a chemical irritant into your varicose veins. That causes the vein lining to swell and form scar tissue that blocks any remaining blood flow.
That starts a process that causes the varicose vein tissue to fade. Full effects take several weeks, and some larger veins may need more than one treatment.
How long do sclerotherapy results last?
The good news is that, once treated with sclerotherapy, varicose veins are gone for good. However, additional varicose can form, particularly if you continue to have risk factors for the condition. These include:
- Being older
- Being female
- Carrying extra pounds
- Tobacco use
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Jobs that require long periods of sitting or standing
- Being pregnant
- Taking hormone medications like birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy

Now is the perfect time to start sclerotherapy for smooth and clear legs this summer. Contact Rinnova Skin & Body in Boulder, Colorado, online or by phone today to schedule an appointment.
